The Guyana Department of Energy, in collaboration with the Guyana Office for Investment (GO-Invest), an entity set up to contribute to Guyana’s economic development, hosted the 2nd Guyana International Petroleum Business Summit & Exhibition (GIPEX-2019) in Georgetown, Guyana from November 20-22, 2019. The convention was a huge success with global participation of 900 delegates and over 250 international and national companies, cementing GIPEX as South America’s largest petroleum summit to date.
Aiming to provide immense opportunities for companies worldwide, the convention outlined why Guyana is the investment opportunity of choice, the significance of the Liza discovery for future exploration programs, and ways Guyana can increase and optimize its oil and gas industry.
GIPEX 2019 was sponsored by many local and international companies including ExxonMobil as the Strategic Partner for the convention. Several ExxonMobil personnel spoke at the summit including Ajmer Samaroo, a facilities engineer. Ajmer told his story of being able to return to his home country of Guyana to pursue his career. During a panel discussion, Ajmer spoke of the future of Guyana saying “I want to build a solid foundation for the next generation. If I struggle, I don’t want to see the next generation struggle”. The exhibition section of the conference saw over 100 exhibitors taking the opportunity to meet with prospective clients and interact with the community. The exhibition was fully accessible to locals on the final day of the conference, allowing for even further community engagement. The ExxonMobil booth was staffed by local and international personnel who interacted with thousands of attendees. The Virtual Reality goggles took the visitors on a virtual tour of the FPSO Liza Destiny and were a major hit with all ages, bringing the scale of the project to life for the participants including children and university students.
