On Saturday, June 22, the naming ceremony took place for the Liza Destiny FSPO in Singapore. In addition to executives from ExxonMobil, SBM, Keppel, Hess and CNOOC International, the event was attended by Her Excellency Mrs. Sandra Granger, the First Lady of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, and the Director of the Department of Energy for the government of Guyana, Dr. Mark Bynoe.
Liam Mallon, president of ExxonMobil Upstream Oil & Gas company, was the senior ExxonMobil representative for the ceremony and related events. Mrs. Granger and Dr. Bynoe were not only in attendance on behalf of the people and government of Guyana, but the First Lady was on hand to bless the Liza Destiny as the ship’s godmother.
By tradition, a ship’s godmother is a female who is invited to “sponsor” a vessel, bestowing good luck and protection over the vessel and all those aboard. As she christened the ship, Mrs. Granger became a key part of the Liza Destiny’s future. Though the crew of the vessel will change over time, Mrs. Granger will always be its godmother.
A guided tour of the FPSO and high tea followed the naming ceremony, with a gala reception taking place later that evening. The focus of all the day’s events was to celebrate the efforts of everyone who worked together as One Team, with the highest attention to safety, in order to deliver this initial FPSO to Guyana. Watch some highlights from the ceremony, including the christening of the Liza Destiny, in this video.
Now that the vessel has been officially christened, it will leave the quayside for the deepwater port as it begins preparation for its long voyage to Guyana. As the first FPSO in the country, the Liza Destiny will play a key role in the development and stewardship of Guyana’s abundant resources and set the standard for operational excellence for the country’s new oil and gas industry.
