Subsurface Team Delivers First Completion

April 2019

To start off 2019, the Liza Phase 1 Subsurface team landed its ninth development well and successfully installed the first well completion. Well completion is the process transforming the hole drilled through the reservoir into a producing asset. It involves placing screens across the open hole, then installing the tubing, monitoring equipment and control systems necessary to direct the flow of oil from the reservoir at the bottom of the well to the production equipment located at the sea floor.

The communication planning done in the fourth quarter of 2018 played a key role to support these activities. The team included geoscience, reservoir, drilling and completions engineers in Houston and Guyana who continuously monitored the well results while drilling to ensure objectives were achieved.

Service partner Halliburton also provided geosteering support with advanced equipment capable of detecting the boundaries of the reservoir to ensure the well stayed in zone. A One Team spirit and clear communications between all participants helped drive a successful first well completion for the Liza field.

The Liza Phase 1 Geoscience team, working in close collaboration with specialists from ExxonMobil Upstream Integrated Solutions Company and seismic processing contractor CGG, delivered the Liza 3D High Resolution seismic dataset in the first quarter.

This data, which was acquired in 2017, will provide the basis of comparison for future 4D seismic monitor surveys over the Liza field area. It also provides enhanced resolution of the Liza reservoirs for well planning and reservoir modelling.
