ExxonMobil’s Liza Phase 1 Project is Guyana’s first oil and gas operation – aiming to deliver first oil onstream in 2019.
The Liza Phase 1 Project is a pioneering, fast-track project led by ExxonMobil and a global team of oil industry engineering and technology supplier partners, to build an industry-leading oil recovery and production operation in offshore Guyana.
Set 120 miles off the north-east coast of South America, in Guyana’s offshore Stabroek block is the Liza Field. The gross recoverable resources for the Stabroek block are now estimated at 3.2 billion oil equivalent barrels, including Liza and other successful exploration wells at Liza Deep, Payara, Snoek and Turbot. The Liza field itself is expected to yield between 800 million and 1.4 billion oil-equivalent barrels, once in full production. Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited is operator and holds 45 percent interest in the Stabroek Block. Hess Guyana Exploration Ltd. holds 30 percent interest and CNOOC Nexen Petroleum Guyana Limited holds 25 percent interest.
This world-class oil discovery will be the foundation of a new oil industry that is set to bring exciting economic opportunities, new prosperity and life-changing benefits to Guyana and its people.
Contractors were encouraged to use the learnings from the workshop to continuously improve pre-job planning, tool box talks, safety meetings, task execution and other activities. As an outcome of the workshop, a Guyana safety council group was created to facilitate further SSHE improvement in Guyana.
ExxonMobil’s priority is the safety of everyone involved with the project, while working closely with Guyana’s government, communities, environmental and socio-economic experts and respecting the environmental and socio-economic needs of
the communities in which it operates.
Named after the country’s first oil exploration wells Liza 1-3, The Liza Phase 1 Project is a highly complex team effort, which brings together experts from more than 12 countries, more than five companies and sub-contractors, working together to build the infrastructure and facilities needed, from wells and drilling operations, subsea equipment, pipelines and vessels.
– How it will work –
The oil lies 3,600m/12,000 feet under the sea bed. Initially, two drill centers will link back to a floating processing, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO) – the Liza Destiny.
Around 17 wells will be drilled into the oil reservoirs, each with a subsea ‘christmas’ tree installed above it. Half will be production wells bringing hydrocarbons up to the surface, the rest will be water and gas injection wells used to maximize oil recovery. This technology will set an industry record for deep water gas injection. Umbilical lines will provide real-time control of the subsea installation from the surface, delivering fluids to encourage the flow of hydrocarbons.
The hydrocarbons will travel from each tree, through manifolds and into flow lines, before risers take the fluids from the seabed up to the FPSO vessel, spread-moored on the surface.
The FPSO is a floating industrial complex continually processing oil separating the gas from the oil. Tankers will visit the FPSO to export Guyana’s first oil to the market over the next 20 years.
The Liza Destiny FPSO will have a storage capacity of 1.6 million barrels of crude oil, producing up to 120,000 barrels of oil per day. Its gas treatment capacity will be around 170 million standard cubic feet per day, with water-injection capacity of about 200,000 barrels per day. Supplier partner SBM Offshore will construct, install, lease and operate the FPSO.
– Liza Project SSHE Principles –
The success of the Liza Phase 1 project is defended by our commitment to our Security, Safety, Health and Environment (SSHE).
Therefore, the Liza Phase 1 Project will:
1. Relentlessly pursue an incident free workplace.
2. Never compromise SSHE to achieve other business objectives.
3. Lead by example through active and visible engagement in SSHE.
4. Communicate and continually reinforce our SSHE expectations to all project stakeholders.
5. Focus on SSHE fundamentals to prevent high potential incidents.
6. Apply a rigorous approach to hazard management and pre-task planning.
7. Create a culture where people can freely express SSHE concerns, make safe choices, recognize contributions, and take pride in our performance.
8. Collaborate with each other to share SSHE solutions and learnings.
9. Passionately protect the environment and communities where we operate by creating strong partnership w/stakeholders.
10. Hold ourselves and others accountable for our SSHE performance.
– Supplier Partners –
ExxonMobil is working with local suppliers in Guyana to build capability and opportunities for local businesses and people, as well as working with global industry supplier partners, with teams contributing from across the world.
TechnipFMC is working on the engineering manufacture and delivery of the subsea equipment for Liza Phase 1. This includes fabricating seventeen, enhanced vertical deep water ‘christmas trees’, associated tooling, five manifolds, associated controls and tie-in equipment.
SBM Offshore will construct, install, lease and operate the FPSO. A former oil tanker vessel is now being converted into the Liza Destiny FPSO at the Keppel Shipyard in Singapore.
SAIPEM will perform engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) of the risers, flow lines, and associated structures and jumpers for The Liza Phase 1 Project. Their work includes transportation and installation of umbilicals, manifolds, and associated foundations for the production, water and gas injection systems.
